If you are planning on throwing an event with a hosted bar you will need to make some decisions on what beverages to provide. Of course the easy answer is “crowd pleasers” but what exactly does this mean? When it comes to wine, think of classic “house wines” you would see on a restaurant menu. While “house wines” are generally associated with lesser quality, your selection doesn’t have to be! This simply means choose the varietals you would find on a “house wine” menu and then select an appropriate wine based on budget and quality preference.
Some of our favorites:
Chenin Blanc (okay maybe not typically seen on a house wine menu, but it should be)
Another really important factor to consider when selecting wines for a hosted bar is what type of food you will be serving. If you are going to be serving something light like chicken piccata or some kind of white flakey fish you will want to avoid heavier wines like malbec. If you are going to be serving heavy pasta dishes with a lot of red sauce skip the sauvignon blanc or chenin blanc all together! If you will be providing a buffet where there are a large array of food options for your guests to choose from, make sure your wine selection reflects this. This way your guests will have the opportunity to make a selection that matches their palate and plate.
